Job hunting Mar. 12th, 2009 @ 05:01 pm
The demoralising search continues. I am trying to find finance work in Melbourne, which appeared to have more jobs than Sydney when I was searching in October before moving here. Now I am not so sure. I get stonewalled by most recruiters, other candidates have stronger resumes/more experience/software experience etc. So frustrating knowing that of the jobs available I am having to apply for ones aimed at people two years earlier in their career than me due to the competition.

In other events, I have a new car. A 1999 Holden Astra, 60,000 kms replaces my dieing 1989 Ford Laser (210,000 kms).  At this stage I am debating selling the Laser or just scraping/wrecking it.  I would rather not see my pod racer go to scrap, but if that's what it comes down to I will.

Feedback sought Feb. 8th, 2009 @ 06:47 pm
Hey all, for the unaware I have moved to Melbourne (intending to escape the heat, but apparently it followed me).

Anyway, I am after some feedback on a business idea I have.

I am considering opening up a Bed and Breakfast type establishment with the distinguishing feature being that the majority of food consumed on the premises is grown on-site, with everything else coming from within 100 km.

How many of you would be interested in staying in such a place? obviously the location would be semi-rural, but I would probably attempt to locate it near some other attractions of interest.  I would also have to acquire many new skills in the realms of cooking on a semi-commercial basis, farming (both animal husbandry and fruit and veg) and organisational/administrative.

Basic idea would be a 4 bedroom homestead, with about 20 chickens, 10-15 sheep, 3 sows + piglets, 3 cows + beef calves and enough vegetables to supply the property for dinners and breakfasts.

Melbourne Sep. 15th, 2008 @ 11:05 am
Okay, I'm deciding whether or not to pull up stumps and move to Melbourne.

I think I would enjoy Melbourne a bit more, although I don't know about the social side of things.

For those of you living in Melb, what's it like? Sly, how does it compare to Sydney?

I am thinking of moving to South Yarra, it seems to be the closest analogue to Glebe/Newtown/Erskineville as far as I can see.  Any comments on the area? How is public transport?

My girlfriend is concerned that Melbourne has a higher crime rate than Sydney, any thoughts on this?

Cheers guys!

I came across this website while using StumbleUpon and sent them the following email.

"I find your stance on homosexuality to be utterly deplorable. I came across your website via an application called "stumble upon" which takes people to sites others have recommended. I was thoroughly disgusted when I read your treatise on homosexuality being against god. So is all sin, but is that not why Jesus died? to save the souls of those who have gone against the wishes of god? Also, I see nothing on your site about the evils of alcohol, yet it is included in the same bible quotation you use to slam homosexuality as ungodly. All this aside, many thousands of species have been observed engaging in homosexual activities, so it is hardly against the laws of nature. If we consider the bible in a historical context then many of the laws make much more sense for those times than they do now. Laws such as those governing dietary habits were in place to protect the fledgling nation of Israel, and laws against homosexuality would have been useful in ensuring the growth of the general populace. I look forward to your reply.

Sincerely,

Matthew White"
» Car reccomendations
I am trying to find myself a nice Hatch/small sedan. I am looking longingly at getting an Alfa Romeo 147, probably a 2001-2004 model.

On the plus side it has a selespeed transmission, which means I can use it as an auto in traffic and manual when I'm really driving, and it means that Dian has no trouble driving it.

If anyone has any alternatives, I'd be happy to hear them.

What I want:
5 door hatch or 4 door small sedan (no family cars)
Tiptronic or similar preferred, but Auto if it has to be
Large enough to fit a set of golf clubs in the boot
Decent performance (sub 10 seconds 0-100)
Nice aesthetics
Under $25,000

From the Money liftout from the SMH

"Welcome to the Rat Race.
Gossip around the Souther Highlands of NSW concerns a multimillion-dollar breeding facility about to be built in semi-rural Moss Vale. Not for cattle, nor thoroughbreds, but those fancy rats that just about every 10-year-old girl seems to have these days."

I am thoroughly disgusted by this concept. It sounds like it is essentially a rat production line. I fear that the poor little ones will be neglected by the operators, not handled nearly as much as they need to be and then sold off as throw-away pets to kids who won't care form them, will keep them in an aquarium to look at every now and then and will abandon as soon as they fall ill. Either that it it will end up as a food farm for snake owners. Either way I am disturbed by the whole concept.

» RAGNAROS DOWN!!
Ragnaros the Firelord, ruler of the Molten Core, has finally fallen to the combined might of the efforts of the crusaders of The Holy Inquisition!

I almost missed out, I got a call at 11:30 to come in and join the fight, they needed healers (I play a druid)

I log in, my net has been playing up all day, dropping out every 5-10 minutes. I get in and for the strategy set up I am logging in, seeing everyone and disconnecting. I log in and it stays up for more than 5 seconds, and the fight starts. By some miracle of fate my net stays up for the full fight. We get him down to 38% before the first wave of sons, which is where we have always fallen apart before. One of the mages gets a nice frost nova off, all the hunters had traps down to slow the sons and warlokcs get a fear off after the frost nova. Cue frost nova and AoE fear rotation and we AoE the sons down. one is kept alive outside the AoE, half the raide go back to their positions and wee focus fire the last one down. Rag comes back up and 2 minutes later he is nothing but a hammer in tthe lava.

Finally.

Massive cheers and yelling through Teamspeak. Loot is checked, Warlock and Priest pants, caster necky and a tanking cape. I got given a blue gun which was random rolled by the raid leader.

Three cheers for THI!
» I'm dreaming of a white christmas
MASSIVE hailstorm here in Glebe for the past 15 mins or so. My whole street is so white, pristine and surreal. Awesome and beautiful

I heard at least 2 car alarms going off, have been hearing several police sirens. It's great! :D

I just hope it clears up in the next hour, since I have to go to my therapy session tonight. >.
» I'm sick >.
I've been better lately, started back on anti-deps and am going to CBT therapy thing.

Unfortunately this weekend has been kinda sucky since my nose is really stuffed up, which has led to a sore throat, coughing, sore nose and very dry lips. :(
» Feeling better
I am annoyed at my damn bug/virus sickness thingy. I missed out on going to the Aroma festival as a result of it :(

I am feeling much better now, still quite sore and feeling a little unwell but overall I am better. Compared to yesterday (vomitted 6 times, fever, diarrhoea and pain all over, especially my tummy) I am a whole world better.rather lethargic at the moment, and a mild headache, but nothing major and no puke today.
» Sick :(
I'm sick :(

Nauseous and tired and sore. :(

I've been to the dc and gotten some drugs. I've been told I can only eat toast, rice, pasta and bannanas until it's finished.

I need something to watch until then. Bring me bannanas and much anime, I say!

» Great Day
I got up, showered and relaxed this morning. Sitting here happily typing away on my computer and I hear something like sand falling, so I figure it's just the stuff in the chimney and forget about it. It happens a couple more times and I hit the fireplace to dislodge whatever I can to make it stop. Go back to web surfing and a chunk of plaster the size of a dinner plate lands on the arm of my chair, narrowly missing me and sending a cloud of crap over my stuff.

I go downstairs and cal the estate agent, the guy who deals with the property isn't there so I leave a message with the secretary and go out the back to chek my washing. Hmmm. The washing line seems to be much lower than usuoh fuck it's fallen off the wall. Another call to estate agent and another thing to add to the list. Joy. Now I don't want to leave my room incase I fall through the stairs or something.

» Struggling
Having quite a bit of trouble motivating myself lately. Just have no drive to
do much of anything. The only things I have been caring about are my darling
Dian and work, and even work I have been rather lax about. I need to figure
out a way to get myself to care about uni or my future or something. I also
need to get out and socialise more, feeling bad for neglecting people but also
feeling to down to be bothered initiating contact.

Happy I managed to get myself up this morning and go to work and then uni,
even though I only have one class today. I am very worried about how I will
get through uni and if I will ever finish. I know I have the brains (or at
least I used to) but I just can't seem to apply myself to the work and get
into it. I am quite interested in my field of study but the first year/basic
classes I am taking are just so dull I don't know what to do.

So far this week:
Monday I worked and then went to uni, Tuesday I house-sat for Dian while
waiting for deliveries, Wednesday I was meant to go to uni but had to go sort
out the lease for my house (leaseholder is moving out and so is another
housemate, so I have to take over the lease and find 2 people to move in with
me.) Got that done and not much else. Thursday I got up in time for uni but
just couldn't get myself to care enough to go, so after I ate and everything I
went to centrelink and tried to get them to give me money. They want me to
show that I have earnt $17k in an 18 month period so they will give me $7,500
per year. grrrr.

I am working tomorrow and then going over to see Dian and spend the first
night in her new place. :) She makes me smile :)
» Week of AWESOME
I got Me and My Katamari for PSP today! :D

I also found Milo and Otis on DVD for $13!

Matt is a happy Matt. :D

Thanks to everyone who showed up for my birthday yum-cha, much fun thanks to all of you.

I had fun on Saturday going furniture shopping with Dian, got some stuff for her new place. After that we went out to a bar for a sydney singles community meetup, meeting Dian's friend John ( [info]hello_kano ) We gave up on that after a little while, and met up with some of John and Dian's friends from uni, had a bite to eat and then went to play pool. about that time we went home and then Dian went back to Chatswood.

Sunday we had Yum-cha at 11:30 or so for my B'day then we went to karaoke and then on to Max Brenner Choccy Cafe. :D Yum!
